Celebrating a Century of Life, Friendship, and Community at Agave Village

Roots Management Group Resident James Peyton turns 100 with over 400 birthday cards and a community celebration to remember.

At Agave Village, a Roots Management Group community, neighbors aren’t just neighbors—they’re extended family. That’s especially true for longtime resident and World War II veteran James, who recently celebrated his 100th birthday surrounded by friends, fellow veterans, local first responders, and hundreds of well-wishers. 

James, a proud Roots Management Group resident, says it best himself: "I love living here. It's home."  And if his birthday celebration is any indication, it’s a home filled with love, honor, and connection. 

The birthday celebration was covered by multiple media outlets including 12News, Arizona's Family (AZFamily), and ABC15 Arizona, highlighting James’ incredible milestone and the heartfelt efforts of his close friend and neighbor, Dave Knoer. 

Knoer, also a resident of Agave Village, had one goal: to collect 100 birthday cards to honor his friend’s 100 years. What he didn’t expect was that effort to go viral resulting in over 400 birthday cards from across the country. 

“He’s just a wonderful guy, and I wanted to do something special for him,” said Knoer in an interview with ABC15. “I just hoped to get 100 cards, and it turned into something much bigger. It’s amazing how many people wanted to be part of his day.” 

The celebration included cake, flags, military salutes, and emotional tributes. The Mesa Fire Department and local police officers joined residents and staff to salute James and thank him for his service. One of the most touching moments was when James, clearly moved, shared that he "never thought I'd live this long," and smiled as he said, "I've had a great life, and I'm so thankful."  

Agave Village Community Manager Roland Rodriguez says the celebration is all about James and the community rallying together.  

“This is what community is all about. James is a treasure—not just because of his military service, but because of who he is every day. We’re lucky to have him here at Agave Village, and this celebration really showed the heart of this community.” 

Office Manager Rebecca Chairez, who attended the party, added: 
“There was so much joy. You could feel it. People came out of their homes, brought cards, hugged James, and stayed to honor him. It was one of those moments you never forget.”
