When it comes to housing and the costs of purchasing a new home, innovation is key to meeting the diverse needs of homeowners. From the exteriors to the interiors, manufactured housing (MH) is undergoing a revolution, offering a blend of functionality, style, and efficiency that challenges traditional notions of home construction.
Doug Tollin, Director of Customer Experience at Champion Homes, sheds light on the groundbreaking advancements in MH, highlighting how factory-built homes are reshaping the industry.
Factory Built vs. Site Built: The Advantage of Off-Site Construction
One of the distinguishing features of MH is its off-site construction approach, contrasting with traditional stick-built homes. Tollin emphasizes the flexibility inherent in MH construction, allowing for homes ranging from 400 square feet upwards. Unlike site-built homes, where larger square footage is often necessary to make the numbers work for builders, MH offers affordability without sacrificing quality or style.
Energy Efficiency and Insulation: Redefining Comfort
MH isn't just about affordability—it's about energy efficiency and sustainability. Tollin points out the advancements in insulation, with homes boasting higher R-values and tighter thermal envelopes. Controlled manufacturing building environments ensure minimal air gaps, enhancing overall energy performance. From efficient water heaters to insulated windows rated by U-value, every aspect of MH is geared towards maximizing comfort while minimizing environmental impact.
Maximizing Space: Innovative Interior Design
The Canyon and Glacier models showcased at the International Builders Show exemplify how MH builders reimagine interior spaces. The Canyon model features recessed cabinets, floating shelves, clever storage solutions, and popular small office spaces complete with built-in desks and additional storage. “This is perfect for someone with a computer to pay bills or keep paperwork out of site and nicely organized in a small office space,” says Tollin. The Glacier model is more of a traditional style home and is smaller than the Canyon, with brushed silver hardware and features you would see in a more conventional home. Both of these homes prioritize functionality without compromising aesthetics. Tollin highlights the versatility of MH, catering to diverse preferences, whether it's a cozy 400-square-foot home or a spacious 1,600-square-foot retreat.
Exterior Innovations: Redefining Curb Appeal
MH isn't just about what's inside—it's about redefining curb appeal. From black transom windows to cable railings, MH exteriors are pushing the boundaries of design. Synthetic wood accents ensure durability and longevity, while innovative rooflines and contemporary flat roof designs depart from traditional aesthetics. Trellises, barndoor entrances, and small-space utilization further showcase the versatility of MH design.
National Impact and Future Prospects
As the largest builder trade show in the US, the International Builders Show serves as a platform to showcase MH innovation. Tollin's insights highlight the growing demand for smaller, more energy-efficient homes tailored to modern lifestyles. “Manufactured Housing is appealing to younger generations who are looking for conservative cost savings but quality home, and retirees who are looking to downsize” says Tollin. Manufactured housing has long been a great source of housing people can afford and being able to add your own creative touch like the accent walls, floating shelving and beams that are very on trend right now are great options for someone looking to add some personal touches without breaking the bank.
From energy efficiency to interior versatility and striking exteriors, MH is redefining what it means to call a house a home. As the industry continues to push boundaries and break stereotypes, the future of housing looks brighter and more exciting than ever.
