As the holiday season draws near, the spirit of giving and community support is stronger than ever at Grand Missouri, a Roots Management Group property in Arizona where neighbors are truly helping neighbors in a time of need.
This past autumn brought financial challenges to many families across Arizona as uncertainties around federal nutrition support programs, especially the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) intensified.
While SNAP benefits have historically provided crucial food aid to hundreds of thousands of Arizonans each month, benefits were disrupted and partially reduced in November 2025 due to broader federal funding complications connected to the government budget and benefit issuance schedule. This situation caused delays and reductions in the food assistance that many low-income households rely on, increasing food insecurity across the state.
In response, community-level support systems like food pantries and mutual aid groups saw a surge in need and participation as individuals and families worked to fill the gap left by delayed federal aid.
At Grand Missouri, Community Manager Rudy Mariscal saw firsthand how deeply these challenges affected residents. Rather than waiting for solutions from outside the community, Rudy took action, right where residents live.

A Pantry for the People: Residents Supporting Each Other
In November, Rudy cleared shelving in the resident kitchen area and converted it into a community food pantry, stocked by residents. Neighbors began bringing in canned goods, pasta, cereal, and other non-perishable items so that anyone facing a short-term need could come and help themselves with dignity and without judgment.
This is grassroots giving at its best, people stepping up for one another when times are tough. Some longtime residents, others new to Grand Missouri, have all contributed to building what has become an informal yet powerful safety net right in the heart of the community.
Residents have been grateful for everything from basic staples like ramen and macaroni to hearty cans of beans and soup, and, importantly, they’ve been happy to give based on what they can provide. Rudy’s deep knowledge of the community has helped ensure those who need help most get it, while also rallying others to pitch in.
Expanding the Spirit of Service Clothing Drive for St. Vincent De Paul
But Rudy didn’t stop at food. For five years, first at another property and now at Grand Missouri, he has organized annual clothing drives benefitting St. Vincent de Paul, a nearby residential shelter dedicated to helping people experiencing homelessness rebuild stability. The shelter not only provides clothing but also assists clients in finding employment and reconnecting with essential resources.
This season, Rudy invited other Roots communities across Arizona to join the effort, expanding the reach of the drive. Last year, several community managers participated and helped collect hundreds of clothing items across Phoenix and Mesa. This year’s collaboration has been great and refreshing to see what can happen when one person’s compassion inspires many. The result is a growing collection of coats, shoes, business attire, and everyday wear that will help neighbors take confident steps toward employment and independence.

More Than Management, Real Community Making a Home
Beyond these efforts, Rudy’s role at Grand Missouri continues to make a tangible difference for residents. Helping tenants move from renting into homeownership is one of his passions, and he has helped many accomplish that dream by guiding them through lending challenges and qualification hurdles, even asking them to work toward stronger credit so they can build equity and stability right where they already feel at home.
“Grand Missouri, the place we call home” isn’t just a phrase, it’s the lived reality Rudy fosters each day.
Whether welcoming a new homeowner at their front door with keys in hand, coordinating drives that bring neighbors together, or ensuring that a pantry is stocked during one of the toughest months for food assistance in Arizona, Rudy exemplifies what it means to lead with heart and community in mind.
Giving Back, This Season and Always
This time of year, reminds us that community isn’t defined by where you live, it’s defined by how you show up for one another.
At Grand Missouri, that’s exactly what’s happening: neighbors helping neighbors, support from within, and a sense of belonging that turns a group of residents into a family.
If you’d like to contribute to the Grand Missouri pantry or the St. Vincent de Paul clothing drive, stop by the clubhouse, every donation, big or small, makes an impact.
