A Holiday Tradition That Brings a Roots Community Together

At Shadow Hills, the holidays don’t just arrive with decorations and twinkling lights, they arrive with neighbors cheering each other on, families strolling the community, and a shared sense of pride that turns ordinary home sites into something magical.

Each year, Shadow Hills hosts its Holiday Decorating Contest, a now-beloved tradition led by Community Manager Jason Trioli. What started as a simple idea during Jason’s first year as community manager has quickly grown into one of the most anticipated events of the season.

“It was my first full year as a community manager after being promoted,” Jason shared. “Roots was really encouraging us to schedule community events, and the Holiday Decorating Contest just felt right. The residents loved it, and it quickly became a tradition here.”

Growing With the Community

Now in its third year, the contest has evolved right along with the neighborhood. What began with paper ballots and poster boards has expanded into an online voting system, making it easier for everyone. E ven those who can’t make it to a central voting station get to participate.

“That accessibility made a big difference,” Jason said. “It allows more voices to be heard and keeps everyone involved.”

And involvement is exactly what residents have brought this year.

“This year has been very competitive,” Jason laughed. “Our previous two champions didn’t decorate this time, so it’s been anyone’s game. The polling has been extremely close.”

More Than Decorations

While the creativity is impressive and the bragging rights are fun, Jason believes it’s the friendly competition that residents enjoy most.

“I love seeing the community go all out,” he said. “And my kids get to enjoy living in a place where neighbors truly bring the holiday cheer.”

That joy has left a lasting impact over the years, especially during the contest’s very first season.

“Our first winner really went all out despite facing several medical challenges,” Jason shared. “He wanted to make sure his family had a happy holiday. He unfortunately passed shortly after, but that recognition meant everything to his family during that season. That moment really captures the heart of this contest.”

Building Community, One Tradition at a Time

Shadow Hills is an all-ages community, and Jason sees traditions like this as especially meaningful for younger residents.

“We’re building a sense of community,” he said. “This is my way of thanking residents for everything they do and helping them feel seen. The kids love being part of the voting process and soaking in the holiday spirit.”

Residents who may feel unsure about participating are always encouraged to jump in.

“I automatically enroll anyone who decorates, and everyone is welcome. It’s all about having fun" says Jason.
