"When the keys are placed in their hands, there's always a pause and a big hug."

For Renita Burrus, Community Manager at Lafayette Park in Fayetteville, North Carolina, that moment never gets old.

Renita

Since joining Roots Management Group in 2024, Renita has helped residents navigate one of the biggest milestones of their lives: becoming homeowners. While every journey is different, she says there is one thing many new homeowners have in common.

"Seeing the smiles and tears is the best part of my job," Renita said. "Those emotions often come out when residents see the closing documents in front of them. They'll take a minute, stare at the papers, then look back up at me like they're in disbelief. My response is usually, 'Yes, this is it!'"

Those reactions are reminders that homeownership is about much more than a house.

It's about stability. Security. Independence. And for some families, it's about creating peace of mind for the future.

That was certainly true for the Green family.

As National Homeownership Month shines a spotlight on the importance of homeownership, the Greens' story serves as a powerful reminder of why the dream of owning a home matters.

The couple had discussed purchasing their home at Lafayette Park for quite some time. They loved the idea of homeownership but worried about securing financing. Their concerns seemed justified after their first attempt to purchase was denied.

Then life delivered even greater challenges.

Mr. Green, who spent his career working at the Goodyear Tire Plant in Fayetteville, was already preparing for retirement after the announcement that the facility would be closing. Around the same time, he received a cancer diagnosis.

Suddenly, the dream of homeownership took on a deeper meaning.

One of Mr. Green's biggest priorities became ensuring his wife would have a comfortable, manageable home where she could continue living independently.

"We had spoken many times about the possibility of purchasing," Renita recalled. "They both loved the idea, but there were concerns about financing."

The couple continued exploring options, but obstacles remained. Financing applications were denied, and uncertainty about the future grew.

Many people would have given up.

The Greens didn't.

Despite the setbacks, Mr. Green remained determined to make homeownership a reality. He explored alternative financing options and ultimately made the difficult decision to use a portion of his retirement savings to help secure the home.

"He was hesitant because he wanted his wife to have that financial cushion if he was no longer here," Renita said. "But becoming a homeowner was more important to him."

After additional conversations, problem-solving, and perseverance from everyone involved, the pieces finally fell into place.

A closing date was set.

And then came the moment Renita knows so well.

The paperwork was signed. The keys were handed over. The dream became reality.

Today, the Greens are proud homeowners through Roots Management Group's Establish Your Roots (EYR) program, which helps residents move from renting to owning and build a stronger future for themselves and their families.

For Mrs. Green, homeownership also means having the freedom to make the space her own.

Known throughout the community for sharing jalapeños from her flowerpot garden with the office staff, she has a passion for plants and gardening. While she hasn't shared all of her plans for the home yet, Renita suspects plenty of greenery will be part of the future.

"She loves plants," Renita said with a smile. "I'm sure she'll make it beautiful."

Stories like the Greens' are why National Homeownership Month matters.

Homeownership creates opportunities for families to build stability, invest in their future, and put down roots in a community they love. It provides more than a place to live, it offers comfort, confidence, and the security that comes from having a place to call your own.

For Renita, who was born and raised in Fayetteville and now looks forward to welcoming her first grandchild this August, helping families achieve homeownership is deeply rewarding.

Watching residents receive the keys to a home of their own never loses its significance.

And she's confident the Greens won't be the last family she celebrates.

"They were our most recent Establish Your Roots home sale," she said. "I say 'most recent' because there will be more."

At Roots Management Group, that's what National Homeownership Month is all about: opening doors, handing over keys, and helping more families experience the moment everything changes.
