As we continue our two-part series honoring the Veterans at Roots Management Group, we proudly recognize three incredible team members whose courage, discipline, and dedication extend far beyond their years in uniform. Their stories are a reminder of the strength, perseverance, and heart that define our Roots family.
Actor Channing Tatum and Sergeant First Class George Mayo, U.S. Army.
Years of Service: 11
Stations and Deployments: Fort Hood, TX (Afghanistan 2014 & 2019), Fort Campbell, KY (Kosovo 2017)
For George Mayo, a Community Manager overseeing Vermillion Estates in Pontiac, IL, and Carriage Lane Estates in Streator, IL, joining the military was the first step toward a lifelong dream: becoming a U.S. Army Sniper. “My life goal was to become a Sniper,” George shared. “The Infantry offered the fastest path for promotion and the best chance to achieve that goal.”
Among his proudest moments are graduating from U.S. Army Sniper School in July 2012 and being inducted into the Order of Saint Maurice, a recognition awarded for exceptional contributions to the Infantry community.
Today, George brings that same discipline and problem-solving mindset to his role at Roots. “The military taught me there’s always a solution to every problem. Some challenges take time, but if you focus on improving every day, you’ll reach your goals.”
Each Veterans Day, George takes time to reflect, spend time with family, and check in with friends from his military days. “It’s a reminder of the sacrifices and challenges that come with military service. For a long time, I didn’t feel my contributions were noteworthy, but today I look back with pride at my service and accomplishments.”

Heather Jones, U.S. Navy, pictured here monitoring incoming flights while on active duty as an Operations Specialist.
Years of Service: 9
Stations and Deployments: California, Washington, and Hawaii, with missions across nearly every continent touching the North Pacific and Indian Ocean.
Adventure and purpose guided Heather Jones into the Navy, where she served for nearly a decade. While her travels took her around the globe, one of her most meaningful experiences happened in Hawaii, where she met her husband and welcomed their two children.
Now serving as Director of Accounts Payable at Roots Management Group, Heather channels her military precision into her daily work. “I love that my job includes working with almost all roles at Roots,” she said. “In the Navy, I learned to always strive for perfection, and if you’re on time, you’re late!”
Heather’s family’s legacy of service continues: her husband served in both the Navy and Army, and her stepson currently serves in the Air Force.
On Veterans Day, Heather keeps it simple “working,” she says with a smile, while taking a moment to thank her fellow Veterans. “Just want to thank all the other Veterans for their service and sacrifice.”
Jim Hake, U.S. Army
For Jim Hake, now the Community Manager at Chancellors in Fountain, Colorado, joining the Army was about making a difference and following a dream of flight. “I wanted the chance to make a difference in the world around me, and to fly a helicopter.”
When asked about his most meaningful memories, Jim doesn’t hesitate: “The brotherhood.”
That deep bond continues to influence his work at Roots, where his focus is on community, safety, and service. “The best part of my job is helping new residents find a home and providing a safe, secure environment that’s good for the whole family.”
Jim credits his time in the Army with giving him the discipline to do what needs to be done “the bad, the good, and the awesome.”
Living in Fountain, Colorado, home to five military bases within 30 minutes, Veterans Day carries extra meaning. “The community outpouring for vets can be overwhelming. It’s the one time the entire area comes together to say thank you. No politics, no games, just gratitude.”
Thank You to All Who Served.
At Roots Management Group, we’re honored to have Veterans like George, Heather, and Jim among our team bringing leadership, integrity, and a spirit of service to our communities every day.
And to all the Veterans who help make Roots what it is today.
We extend our deepest gratitude to all who have served and sacrificed to protect our freedoms.
Your courage and commitment inspire us all.
