In recent years, there has been a captivating and growing fascination with downsizing and embracing simpler, more sustainable living spaces. Among the many options that have emerged, Park Model RVs have carved out a special place in the hearts of those seeking compact yet comfortable abodes that redefine the boundaries of modern living.
We recently had the chance to sit down with Dick Grymonprez, the Director of Park Model Sales for Skyline Champion Homes, to learn more about these fascinating RVs.
First, it is essential to understand that a park-model RV (Recreational Vehicles) is not a permanent home. By code, it is classified as an RV, designed primarily for recreational use, such as weekend getaways or vacation cottages. Unlike manufactured homes, Park Model RVs do not meet local wind or thermal zone requirements, making them unsuitable for full-time living.
Park models have been around for at least 25 years, serving as destination cottages or cabins. While some states allow them on rural properties, they are commonly found in RV campgrounds or communities.
So, what is the appeal of Park Model RVs? “They are great for vacation or getaway cottages, allowing individuals to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life says Grymonprez, adding that the distinct feature of Park Model RVs is their compact size, with outside dimensions required to be under 399 square feet. Despite the limited space, these units have full-size appliances and ample storage. Some models can accommodate up to 12 people thanks to features like bedrooms, bunk rooms, sofa sleepers, and lofts.
“Customers have the flexibility to customize their Park Model RVs. They can add porches, lofts, upgrade appliances, choose different options and colors for various elements, and even opt for higher ceilings,” adds Grymonprez. We also noticed that the Park Model RVs are very energy-efficient due to their small size. They can be heated and cooled using a 2-head mini-split, cost-effective and environmentally friendly system.
Roots Management Group has Park Models in predominantly 55+ communities. "We can add them to the smaller sites that will not accommodate a manufactured home," says Justin Lindstrom, Construction Controller at Roots Management Group.
"We allow and encourage residents looking for more space to build add-on rooms behind the carport, which many residents in Arizona and Florida take advantage of. "This is a good transition option for those upgrading from the RV lifestyle."
Park Model RVs from Skyline Champion Homes come in a wide price range, typically from $50,000 to $150,000, making them an affordable choice for many. The Park Models usually take one to six months from order to completion. “The building process for Park Model RVs closely resembles that of manufactured homes. However, the key difference is that the wheels and axles must remain attached, as Park Model RVs are designed to stay in RV mode.” Says Grymonprez.
One of the captivating aspects of park-style manufactured homes is the variety of layouts and customization options available. These homes can cater to various preferences and needs from cozy one-bedroom abodes to spacious multi-bedroom configurations. Modern design elements and thoughtful space utilization ensure that every square foot is maximized for functionality and comfort.
Skyline Champion Homes is the largest builder of Park Model RVs in the United States, boasting 12 plants nationwide. These units often go by brand names like Athens Park and Shore Park, reflecting the company's commitment to quality and craftsmanship.
